Mary Webster--Portrait #3
GILDED PORTRAIT FRAME
Circa 1845

  • A beautiful wide and shallow ogee profile in gold leaf over dark grey bole. Note how the original gilded finish alternates between contrasting matte and burnished surfaces. The color of the gold is a warm yellow. The outside edges of the frame are concave, and they bear traces of old ochre paint. The corners are mitered.
  • Rabbet size 30 1/2"H x 25 1/2"W
  • Sight Size 29 1/2"H x 24 1/2"W
  • Overall size 37 1/2"H x 32 1/2"W
  • Molding width 4 1/4"
  • Molding depth at outside edge 2"
  • Condition: Excellent overall condition with a brilliant original surface. The gray bole shows through in some areas; there is a little cracking of the gesso in one corner and some small gesso losses. The last detail photo indicates how the hanging screw eyes punctured the surface with 1/4" holes through the back of both long sticks.
